The science faculty at Sirius Academy North follows the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3.

This gives students a balanced curriculum where aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are studied throughout each year. We strongly believe in the value of practical and investigative work and try to involve the students with as many hands on learning activities as is possible in each topic.

The science faculty wants students to engage with science outside of the classroom in as many ways as is possible. Our faculty reward scheme enables students to take part in scientific events at, amongst other places, The University of Hull and The Deep, and we have visitors who come into the school wherever possible to allow students to see how gaining science qualifications can lead to exciting careers. Last year students were able to explore science based careers with BAE, the RAF and designing Virtual Reality environments.

We have a science club where students have the opportunity to carry out practical activities which are exciting and engaging and enables students to work towards the whole school ‘Expert Learner’ status.

We want students to achieve in, and enjoy science, to see the impact it has on everyday life and realise the many opportunities that are open to them through choosing to continue to study science Post-16.

The science faculty at Sirius Academy North follows the AQA exam board specification at Key Stage 4.

The majority of pupils study the AQA combined Science (trilogy) GCSE Course. This qualification gives puplils 2 GCSE Grades and has been selected to allow students to study aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics throughout each year in the Key Stage. These qualifications also ensure that those pupils who wish to can make the transition from GCSE to Post-16 courses very easily.

Some pupils in Year 10 choose to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate GCSE Courses. These qualifications are best suited to those pupils whom have expressed a strong interest in studying Science subjecs Post-16.

A tailored intervention strategy is in place to support pupils who are struggling with aspects of the curriculum and provide them with extra support to help them achieve the best possible qualifications at the end of Year 11.

Our faculty rewards system encourages pupils to become “expert learners” in science and those pupils who achieve that status are entitled to attend visits which are designed to enable students to see the breadth of career opportunities which are available if science is studied to a higher level post-16.

After school and lunchtime revision sessions are in place to support pupils with exam preparation and to allow them to become “expert learners” across the whole school. A homework club is available supported by our faculty Teaching Assistant and all staff are willing and able to support pupils in any way they can to ensure that pupils reach their potential.
