Sex education, as defined by the National Curriculum, is taught as part of science lessons and within our Pastoral Programme. The facts surrounding human reproduction will be taught in these lessons. The Academy also uses the experience of the school nursing service in delivering Sex and Relationship education, specific to the needs of a particular year group. As students’ progress through the Academy, wider aspects of sex education are considered in Religious Education and tutorial lessons, including personal relationships. Related issues such as smoking, alcohol, drug abuse and nutrition are also addressed. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all, or part of, the sex education programme that is not part of National Curriculum Science. A request to this effect would need to be made in writing to the Principal.
