Creative and Performing Arts

In the creative arts we offer students a wide range of engaging subjects which will allow students to discover their creative potential, develop their independent skills and engage with a wide range of material which they will explore, respond to and reflect upon.

Art

Students will work with on different projects which will allow them to develop their knowledge of the subject as well as work with a range of materials and textures whilst developing their own art work. Students will work on the following:

Enlargement grid project, covers drawing, oil pastel, painting and mixed media techniques as an introductory project.

Music

Students will be introduced to a number of musical instruments, they will be given an insight into what life is like in the music industry as well as being encouraged throughout all lessons to develop their confidence and reflective skills. The students will look at the following:

Key Stage 4 (BTEC Level 2 First Award in Music)

The Hull Music Hub

This is a collaboration of several organisations in Hull who together offer4 a range of activities and opportunities for young people to access and experience music.  Full details are on the website www.hullmusichub.com but briefly includes; Schools, Academies and Colleges, the Local Authority, the City Arts Unit, the Youth Development Service, Hull University and the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra plus several national organisations e.g. the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Music 4U, The Sixteen and the Early Music Centre.

The Hull Music Service

Is the Lead Organisation for the Hull Music Hub and delivers the bulk of the core and extension roles as directed by the National Plan for Music Education (NPME).  Being designated the Lead Organisation has secured the Arts Council Funding for the Music Service for the last four years and also for next year too.  The Hull Music Hub has the responsibility to deliver the NPME and the Music Service has the vital role, on behalf of the Hub, of ensuring not only this aspect of delivery but also meeting all the requirements of the Arts Council e.g. collecting, collating and reporting data and also responding to Ofsted and DfE policies and strategies as appropriate.


Drama

Students will work on a number of different projects which are designed to introduce them to all the skills and techniques necessary to make a piece of successful Drama. They will learn how to work with others, share their ideas with confidence and lead a group. The students will look at a range of playwrights and explore how to bring them to life effectively for an audience. The students will

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 4 Drama (BTEC Level 1/2 Drama)

The BTEC Tech award in Drama provides students with the opportunity to develop, refine and reflect on their skills in Drama, both practically and theoretically.  The course lends itself to practical learners, allowing students to perform on a weekly basis.

On the course students get to study a range of drama styles such as Physical Theatre, Naturalism,Comedies and more.  Leadership and independent learning time is highly encouraged, giving students the chance to lead their peers and support in personal development.

Students also take part in shows and performances inside and outside of school.  This is to supplement their coursework and display their work to family and friends.


Photography

Students will be introduced to the course by looking at the formal elements of photography beginning with basics such as shutter speed, depth of field and composition.

They will then work on a number of projects following the GCSE format.

Projects include

Pupils will carry out a range of tasks to develop their photographic skills in preparation for the exam which takes place over a period of 2 days.

Pupils will research and explore artists work such as Jenny Holzer, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Martin Parr & Burton Pritzker.

Pupils have access to a range of professional standard facilities such as digital SLR cameras, studio lighting equipment and a mac suite for editing.


Dance (BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Dance)

The BTEC Tech award in Dance provides students with the opportunity to develop, refine and reflect on their skills in Dance, both practically and theoretically.  The course lends itself to practical learners, allowing students to perform on a weekly basis.
