Learning a language develops many skills

Modern Languages develop students’ literacy skills which has impact across the curriculum, communication skills, critical thinking, promotes empathy and fosters a knowledge of other cultures as well as broadening our understanding of the world. In learning about grammar our students gain a better understanding of literacy in English. Employer surveys show that pupils’ future employability is enhanced by knowledge of a foreign language.

Every student in KS3 at Sirius Academy North learns French or German, two of the international languages of communication. Dependent on the Pathway being followed, students in KS4 have the opportunity to then study the language to GCSE level.

Courses at both KS3 and KS4 focus on all four skills areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and encourage students to communicate and use language for real purposes.

In KS3 students acquire a broad base of linguistic skills through the topics of:

personal information, school subjects and the school day, sports and hobbies, family, pets and descriptions, the weather, snacks, cafes and meals, house and home, holidays, parts of the body and illness

At KS4 students follow the AQA French or German GCSE course.  The topic content is common to both examinations and covers the 3 themes of:

Theme 1: Identity and culture

Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest

Theme 3: Current and future study and employment.

Students use a range of materials and technology to enhance their learning and also access authentic books and films in French/German in four dedicated language teaching rooms. There are regular opportunities to attend after school booster sessions.  The Department also offers an annual educational visit to France or Germany.  This has included the opportunities of a trip to Disneyland Paris and a visit to the Christmas Markets in Cologne Germany.
