Tonight myself and Miss Warrener took the year 8 and 9 girls rugby team to St Mary’s to take part in the Hull Schools Rugby competition. After a disappointing result in the u15 competition a couple of weeks ago, the year 9’s were desperate to put in a good performance in tonight’s u14 tournament. The girls played in a round robin competition, coming up against 4 other teams.
The first game saw us get the big Derby out of the way against our rivals Sirius West. After a close start, the girls got into their stride and dominated the game superbly, finishing 6-2 to SAN. Hollie Agar (x3), Liv Fowler, Sophie Hardy and Alisha Brennon with the tries gave us bragging rights over our colleagues.
Our second game against Boulevard saw the girls continue this excellent momentum. Dominatant from the start, we came out comfortable 4-0 winners, Galina Kitoga, India Price (x2) and Hollie Agar going over the line to score.
Our third game against Malet proved to be a close encounter and a tough game for the girls. However Galina got us off to the perfect start, hurdling over a diving Malet challenge and ran the length of the pitch to score the first try. Both teams defended superbly, with the score eventually finishing 2 a piece, India Price scoring our second try.
The girls went into the final game knowing that only a win would secure first place for team SAN. St Mary’s were the opposition and this proved to be the most exciting game of the evening. After going 3-2 down the girls fought valiantly to put St Mary’s under heaps of pressure. Their hard work paid off, scoring 3 successive tries in the last 3 minutes to secure a 5-3 win and gold medals in the Hull Schools competition.
The girls played absolutely superbly throughout and deserved their victory. We are immensely proud! If you see any of the girls around the academy, please congratulate them for their amazing efforts tonight:
Special thanks goes to Kaysea Miah in year 10 who warmed the girls up and offered great coaching and support throughout the tournament.
