Year 11 Girls finish 3rd in Yorkshire Qualifying Rugby Competition

[08 Nov 2021]

The Sirius Academy North Year 11 Girls played in the Yorkshire Rugby League Qualifying Tournament at St Marys College, and did themselves proud by finishing in 3rd place and picking up a bronze medal. Four schools entered into the competition (Archbishop Sentamu, Malet Lambert and Wolfreton) with the top 2 going through to the Yorkshire stages. Each team played each other in a 20 minute game.

Sirius Academy North 6 Malet Lambert 11

First up for Sirius North in the competition was Malet Lambert. Sirius started well as they scored from their first set of six with Rejoice Ukaegbu powering over from close range. Malet Lambert went over for two tries of their own before Scarlett Pacey showed her strength to go over. A few errors from Sirius North gifted Malet a couple of tries but then Sirius responded well again, this time it was smart thinking from Amber Reid as she showed great skill and vision to scoot over. Another couple of tries from Malet before the try of the game was scored just before halftime by the North girls, as Demi Giblin offloaded superbly in the tackle to the impressive Amelia Beech who ran onto the ball at pace as she went over to make it 6 – 4 at the break in favour of Malet Lambert.

Malet Lambert seemed to start the second half at a quick pace and scored two more quick tries. Credit to the Sirius North they never gave up and shared the work in attack, with Elizabeth Mwarua and Courtney Beet running the ball in at every opportunity. But it was Rejoice Ukaegbu who was causing the opposition problems as she went over for two more tries in the later stages of the game to make the final score Malet Lambert 11 Sirius Academy North 6.

Sirius Academy North 1 Archbishop Sentamu 6

The Sirius girls knew that the Archbishop Sentamu side would be good, with many of them training at Hull KR twice a week for their U16s team. But this didn’t stop the Sirius North side from giving it their all in the game. Archbishop had some extremely fast players that found gaps in the Sirius defence as they scored some excellent individual tries throughout the game. Sirius we’re determined to get a try of their own, and they managed this when a smart tap and go from captain Amelia Beech caught the Archbishop side off guard as she went over to make the final score Archbishop Sentamu 6 Sirius Academy North 1.

Sirius Academy North 2 Wolfreton 1

Sirius North managed to finish on a high and take third place after a victory against Wolfreton. Jess Thompson, Megija Grzibovska and Saffron Green grew in confidence as the tournament progressed and made great contributions in attack and defence. First over for the Sirius side was the hard-working Amber Reid, who once again scooted from acting half back after seeing a gap in the defence. Wolfreton got the scores back level as the game stayed evenly matched. But it was the strong powerful run of Rejoice Ukaegbu that was the difference as she powered over from close range to win the game.

Please congratulate the Year 11 Girls rugby team on their performance, teamwork and resilience. They did themselves and the Academy proud:-

Amelia Beech, Jess Thompson, Courtney Beet, Megija Grzibovska (Year 10), Rejoice Ukaegbu, Saffron Green, Scarlett Pacey, Amber Reid (Year 10), Elizabeth Mwarua and Demi Giblin.

Special thanks to Mr Tindall for his support with the team.
