The Sirius Academy North Year 9 boys rugby team played in their first of the three Yorkshire League matches and came out victorious with a convincing win over Airdale Academy, Castleford by 64 points to 0.
The game couldn't have got off to a better start as the ball was fielded well from the kick off by Aleks Ludowicz who set the tone of the game with a powerful run forward, and from their first set of six they managed to get over the tryline with ease after a great run down the right from Louis Gibson, try converted by Declan Opie. It wasn't long before Louie Gibson went over for his second of the match after great work from TJ Lawrence. The tries kept coming for the impressive Sirius North side as Callum Azab was proving too strong for the Airedale defence down the middle of the park, going over for two tries in quick succession, both converted by Declan Opie. Corey Burrows was looking dangerous every time he got the ball and also went over for two tries of his own after running some great lines to break through the defence. Declan Opie converted both to make it 32 - 0 after only 20 minutes. The last five minutes of the first half saw two more impressive team tries for Sirius North as Tommy Uscroft and Callum Shaw both extended the lead even further, to make the halftime score 46 - 0. The most impressive thing about the first half was the 100% completion rate in attack, considering they had the ball for the majority of the half, not one mistake was made, which is good stats for any team at any level.
The second half started with Airedale having the ball in good field position for the first time in the match, but the Sirius North defence stood strong against some big, strong players. Louie Gibson opened the scoring in the second half with a great individual try. Corey Burrows showed great attitude and team work as he he broke through the line and could have gone over the tryline himself but unselfishly passed the ball to the supporting Declan Opie. Georgee Hicks was next to make good yards forward as he ran the ball over 50 metres, but unfortunately a high tackle prevented him from stepping round the fullback and going over for a try himself. The resulting penalty saw great hands down the line for Corey Burrows to go over. Corey made it four tries for himself and rounded off the scoring to cap off a fine individual and team performance, with scoreline ending in Airedale Academy 0 Sirius Academy North 64.
Next up for the talented Year 9 Boys rugby team is Corpus Christie on Tuesday, this will be a more difficult test, but if they can play like they did today then they will give themselves a great chance of not only winning the game but gaining a place in the National Stages.
Please congratulate the boys on their attitude, behaviour and performance, they were an absolute credit to the Academy.
Special thanks to Jack Lazenby for his support with boys.
