Girls Year 7 Rugby League – Sirius Academy 2 Thomas Ferens Academy 5
Sirius Academy 2 Thomas Ferens Academy 5
Thomas Ferens Year 7 Girls played their first ever game of full contact rugby league, when they took on Sirius Academy and did themselves proud with a 5 tries to 2 victory (see attached photos). The game started in favour of Sirius as Beth Dixon raced over to score the first try of the game as Thomas Ferens started a little disorganised. As the game progressed it was Thomas Ferens who looked the most dangerous in attack and also solid in defence. Terri Leigh Hutton was outstanding from marker play, ensuring that the Sirius girls weren’t making many yards forward. On the back of a great defensive set, Thomas Ferens looked after the ball well and got near the Sirius tryline, and there was no stopping Charlie Stephenson as she crashed over from close range. This gave the girls some real confidence as they continued to win the defensive battle with pure determination and desire, showing great toughness and teamwork. Thomas Ferens took a well deserved lead shortly after, a good strong run from Maddie Ward out wide and quick scoot from Macey Boyle put them in some good field position and captain Kelsey Uscroft ran onto the ball with power and pace to go over for her first try of the game. Leoni Parry was introduced during the first half and made a massive impact with her strong runs down the middle of the park, some good footwork from Jamie Leigh Harold again saw the Thomas Ferens girls dominate in going forward, and just before the halftime break it was Kelsey Uscroft again who powered over to extend the lead to 3 – 1.
The second half continued with Thomas Ferens being the most aggressive, showing real determination to extend their lead even further, this time it was the energetic Terri Leigh Hutton, who saw a gap from the acting half back position and scooted over for a well deserved try. Sirius replied again through Beth Dixon to make the scoreline 4 – 2 with ten minutes to go. But it was Thomas Ferens who finished on top with a last minute try, which was well worked as Terri Leigh Hutton went left from dummy half and brought Kelsey Uscroft through the gap for her to go over for her hat-trick.
This was an outstanding victory for the Thomas Ferens girls, who just grew in confidence as the game went on, showing skill, strength, teamwork and determination. They really wanted to win this game and it showed, they thoroughly deserved the win and have shown that they can certainly progress on to the Yorkshire Finals as Year 8’s and really be contenders to go through to the National Stages.
The game as a whole was played at a very good standard and with great sportsmanship, both teams should be proud of their performance.
Thank you to all staff and parents that came down to support, with special thanks to Miss Warriner and Miss Wilson for their continued support and driving the girls down to the match.
Please congratulate the squad on their attitude, behaviour and success!
