With three teams representing Sirius Academy at the U13 and U15 Girls Rugby Union Yorkshire Finals for the first time ever, it was a new experience for Sirius Academy North as this was their first year playing rugby, but managed to win all their games last week at the East Yorkshire Competition to join Sirius West U13’s who had also come top of their group at the same competition. Sirius West U15’s team had gone through on merit to the Yorkshire Finals as they have been the National Finalists for the last two years.
Sirius West U13’s had a tough group of five teams but started the competition in fine form with a 7 – 3 victory of Wales Academy. In the absence of captain Beth Dixon, it was Mille Jordan who led the team, and she did a fantastic job, looking strong in attack and defence. Milly was first on the scoresheet before Cody Bramham showed her strength to double the lead. Shortly after Milly got her second after stepping her way through the defence. Wales got one back but Sirius kept on working hard as a team in attack and after some great work by Tilly Lee she managed to put away Georgia Coggin into a gap who showed real pace to go over in the corner. Milly Jordan rounded off her hat-trick before the halftime break. The second half Wales scored first but Sirius replied shortly after, Rachel Fox was the creator of this one as she put Millie Jordan in again. Cody Braamham scored her second before Wales went over for a consolation.
The second game was against Settle Academy, the game was very evenly matched, but two quick tap penalties for Settle saw them score two tries in quick succession. Kalisha Quantock and Caitlin Faulder were really working hard in defence to ensure Settle did not extend their lead further. Lucy Sainty was close to getting one back for Sirius but was just held up short.
Castleford Academy was next up for Sirius, and they scored a superb try from the start, Sirius had really done well to put in some strong tackles but the quick offloads created the gap outwide. Sirius looked good on their first attack too and nearly went in at the corner, a great pass from Tegan Lawler to Lydia Walker sent her into a gap outwide, but a last ditch tackle prevented her from scoring in the corner. Rachel Robinson and Levis Lewis came into their own in the game and was taking the ball up well, but also putting their body on the line in defence. Castleford went over for two late tries to seal the victory.
The final game against Huntington ended in a 3 – 3 draw in a very evenly matched game as both teams struggled with fatigue and niggling injuries. Huntington went over first before captain Mille Jordan responded immediately. Huntington went over again, but again Sirius replied back with a well worked try from Lucy Sainty. Huntington thought they had won the game when they went over late on, but Milly Jordan had other ideas as she showed real determination to go over and level the scores just before the full time whistle.
Please congratulate the U13 Sirius West girls on their performance, attitude and behaviour:- Milly Jordan, Levis Lewis, Kalisha Quantock, Rachel Fox, Tilly Lee, Tegam Lawler, Lydia Walker, Caitlin Faulder, Cody Bramham, Lucy Sainty, Rachel Robinson and Georgia Coggin
The Sirius Academy U13 North team had a tough group also, but certainly did themselves proud in their first ever Yorkshire Rugby Union Competition, scoring some fantastic team tries.
The talented Sirius Academy U15 girls team continued their rugby success by winning this RU Yorkshire Competition, which will see them once again compete in the National RU Finals. The same group have girls will also play in the National Finals for rugby league on 5th May in Warrington before they play two days after in the RU National Finals where they will be looking to have a repeat of 2014 were they were crowned the best school team in the country at League and Union.
Special thanks to U13s Sirius North coach Katie Warrener and U15 Sirius West Coach Sarah Murphy-Corish (reports to follow).
