Sirius Academy North Year 10 Girls are crowned Hull Schools Champions at Touch RL
Sirius Academy Year 10 Girls rugby team were crowned the Champions of Touch Rugby League at the Hull KR Sky Try Tournament, played on the main pitch at the KC Lightstream Stadium, home of Hull KR.
Sirius Academy North 0 Malet Lambert 0
Sirius Academy North started well in the tournament against a strong Malet Lambert side. Sirius had most of the ball near the Malet tryline but could not find the try that would see them start off with a victory. Lydia Spenceley looked to have gone over in the corner but the referee deemed a knock on. The teamwork and defence on show from the Sirius side was outstanding as they drew the first game 0 – 0.
Sirius Academy 2 South Holderness 1
Sirius got off to a flying start as they attacked the South Holderness tryline with some great quick play the balls, on the last tackle some smart thinking from Sasha Greenall as she dummied the ball right and went left to scoot over and score the opener. Sirius then conceded their only try of the tournament as a stray pass was picked up by South Holderness and they went over to equalise. The determination of the Sirius team was evident as they showed real urgency and desire to get back up the field quickly and put Lydia Spenceley over the tryline for what would be the winning try.
Sirius Academy 2 Archbishop Sentamu 0
Sirius knew that Archbichop Sentamu had won both their previous games and that if they were to win the tournament they needed a victory. The game started evenly matched with both teams playing good attacking rugby and solid in defence. But as the game progressed Sirius showed their skill and stamina to go over for two tries in quick succession. Once again Sasha showed good vision to scoot over in the corner and then Lydia Spenceley went through the gap to make it two tries to nil. Captain Corey Lane was organising the attack and defence well from the middle of the park to ensure her team came away with the win.
Sirius Academy 4 Hessle 0
Sirius had to beat Hessle to win the trophy, and they went out full of confidence and determination after a great victory against Archbishop Sentamu. Sirius settled the nerves early on as Lydia Spenceley went over in the first set of six. The quick team play from Sirius was incredible as Hessle struggled to compete at the pace set. Cara Lowther and Rihanna Hodgins were supporting the play well and making great yards forward. A great run from Leah Puckering put Sirius into some great field position and another quick play the ball saw Lydia Spencley go over again. The Sirius defence again was impressive as Hessle could not get out of their own half. Captain Corey Lane had led by example all tournament and got a well deserved try to extend the lead. The try of the game was next to come as Megan Wilson picked up a loose ball and ran over 60 yards, outpacing the Hessle team to score her first try of the competition.
With 3 wins and 1 draw the Sirius Academy North team lifted the trophy with pride as they celebrated an outstanding performance to ensure they were crowned the Champions of Hull at Touch Rugby League.
Please congratulate the squad on their fantastic achievement, behavior and attitude, they were a real credit to the Academy and fully deserved to be champions.
