Sirius Academy North Year 11 Boys Rugby

[28 Feb 2024]
The Year 11 Sirius North Boys Rugby team took to the field for the last time, when they took on an extremely talented side from York High School in the Yorkshire Plate competition. The Year 11s were the first to wear the brand new Sirius North rugby kit (photo attached).
Sirius started the game well and completed their first few sets of six, with Soulayman and Edongituo taking the ball up at every opportunity and making some great yards forward. This put Sirius in good field position, but they could not capitalise on this, with some poor choices near the York try line.  The defence stood strong as York tried to take the ball out of their own twenty-meter line, and Sirius forced them into making errors. Another set of six came to nothing as the ball was just ran into the middle when there was space to exploit out wide.  York got into their stride and managed to go over for a try to make it 4 – 0. Sirius had the opportunities to go over too, but once again they just could not turn their possession into points. Dillon, Abdullah and Oliver were starting to come more into the game more and make some good yards in attack. Ben and Jack also looked dangerous with ball in hand, but they could not find the breakthrough they needed. Just before the halftime whistle York went over again to make the halftime score 10 – 0 in their favour.
The Sirius North boys were praised for their superb effort levels in attack and defence, unfortunately their lack of rugby knowledge was preventing them from exploiting any space out wide, but the energy levels, desire and determination was evident, which is all that can be asked of them.  Ben and Oscar tried to make things happen in the second half, along with the dangerous running from  Soulayman, Edongituo and Abdullah who were breaking the line and causing York problems. York did however run away with it in the second half as they played some fast, exciting rugby that Sirius struggled to cope with. However, the boys can be extremely proud of how far they have come over the last year. With only one rugby player in the side, its a big ask to play against a team of players that have been playing for a club for many years, but they never took a backwards step, were willing to keep learning and giving it a real go.
Please congratulate the players on their attitude, effort and character. They have been an absolute pleasure to work with, and I am sure that if they use that same determination going forward then they will be successful in their exams and beyond.
