Food
In Year 7 students will gain an understanding into balanced diets and the Eatwell guide. Students will look at the range of food groups and how these contribute to a healthy balanced diet. Students will also gain an understanding in food labelling, the traffic light symbol, and calories. Students will create a range of dishes, to develop their cooking skills and to gain an understanding in food preparation methods. Alongside this, they will also learn about the importance of personal hygiene and safety in the kitchen and how to assess hazards and minimise risks.
In Year 8 students will continue to develop their understanding of balanced diets, with the focus to examine the function of nutrients and linking these back to the Eatwell guide. Students will also investigate the nutritional needs of different life stages. Students will continue to develop their practical skills, with dishes becoming more complex. Furthermore, students will learn about the importance of personal hygiene and safety in the kitchen and how to assess hazards and minimise risks.
In Year 9 students will continue to develop their knowledge of balanced diets delving further into nutrients and nutrient imbalance. Students will continue to create dishes using a variety of complex practical skills. Students will also have an introduction to the Hospitality and Catering course that they could complete at KS4; looking at establishments, job roles and customer needs within the industry.
