Year 10 Boys Rugby: Sirius Academy North 18 Holmfirth Academy 18

The Year 10 Boys played in their first of two Yorkshire Cup League matches today against Holmfirth Academy at the University of Hull. It was good to see 16 boys in the squad, with a mixture of experienced players and players that are new to the game, along with a few Year 9s who were wanting to step up to the year above.
The game started with both teams making a lot of errors and not completing their sets of six. On their first completed set it was Sirius North who went over for the first try of the game, some smart play from Tommy Uscroft at acting half back who sent Louie Gibson through a gap with his well-timed draw and pass, Louis showed speed and strength to go over in the corner to make it 4 – 0. The game continued to see lots of errors from both sides, but two good defences on show also. Callum Azab and Desmond Duru were putting in some big hits and forcing the Holmfirth side to knock on. But it was Holmfirth who got a try back of their own as they powered over from close range, conversion successful to put them in the lead at 6 – 4. Great attitude by the Sirius side saw them reply back immediately to put them back in front, as the strong, powerful running by Adrian Salmonowicz was too much for their defence to handle as he scored a fine solo try, Declan Opie converted to make it 10 – 6 to Sirius at the halftime break.
Unfortunately a knock to influential half back Will Precious meant he had to leave the field, which was a massive blow for Sirius as he had been looking good in attack and defence. The second half saw Holmfirth control the ball better and when they put a precision kick to the corner on the last it was fielded well by their winger to make it 12 – 10 back in favour of Holmfirth. They extended the score shortly after when their fastest strongest player ran through the middle of the Sirius defence and there was no catching him as he scored under the sticks 18 – 10. Credit to the Sirius North side, they knew they had 15 minutes left and really got at the Holmfirth side, and they got their rewards when they got into some great field position after a fine run by Aleks Ludowics. Declan Opie took control and fired a superb pass out to winger Georgee Hicks who went in at the corner to make it 18 – 14. This gave Sirius a lot more confidence and belief and with five minutes on the clock they levelled the scores, this time it was a cut out pass from Tommy Uscroft to Georgee Hicks, who once again went in at the corner for his second try of the game at 18 – 18. Both teams had chances to win the game, but both defences stood strong in the final stages, as the scoreline remained 18 – 18 till the final whistle.
Next up for the Year 10 Boys is a tough fixture against a very strong Castleford Academy side on Friday 13th December, 2pm KO at the University of Hull.
