Year 10 Girls Rugby League: Archbishop Sentamu 4 Sirius Academy North 8

Year 10 Girls Rugby League
Sirius Academy North 8 Archbishop Sentamu 4
The Year 10 girls teams from Sirius Academy North and Archbishop Sentamu played against each other in their very first game of rugby league with both teams looking strong in attack and defence, with very few errors.
The game started very evenly matched with both sides having an organised defence that was not allowing any players break through the line. Corey Lane and Lydia Spencely were taking the ball up well and making good yards forward, with Sascha Greenall scooting at every opportunity and causing the Archbishop defence all sorts of problems with her speed and agility off the mark. Sirius had more possession of the ball in good areas but could not make it count, and then against the run of play the Archbishop Sentamu player found a gap out wide and outpaced the defence to go over for the first try. Sirius Academy responded really well from their next attacking set of six, and Corey Lane showed her speed and strength by going over to equalise. This gave the Sirius team some real confidence as they defended the next set of six very well, with all players working hard for each other and putting in some big hits. Megan Wilson and Rihanna Dore were getting more into the game and seeing more of the ball in attack. Just before the halftime whistle, a great run from Grace Nettleton got her ten yards away from the Archbishop tryline and she gave off a superb offload to the supporting Lydia Spencely who crashed over to extend the lead.
The second half started well for Archbishop as they made their way up the field and went over from close range to make the score 2 – 2. After that it was all Sirius for the next five minutes of the game as they began to dominate with two quick tries, one was from the outstanding Corey Lane who was breaking through tackles with her strong running, and the other was from Cara Lowther who spotted a gap in the defence and went through it with real pace. Archbishop got a try back from the restart as Sirius were still making their way back into the defensive line. But again Sirius got themselves into good areas of the pitch and went over for three more tries, the hard working Lydia Spencely got another well deserved try before Leah Puckering showed pace and awareness to notice a gap on the right. Corey Lane made it a hat-trick of tries for herself as she powered over with real determination to make it 7 – 3 in favour of Sirius Academy. Archbishop got another try, but it was Sirius who had the last word as Ellener Smith went over in the corner after some smart decision making. The final score was 8 – 4 to Sirius Academy North, but both sides can hold their heads up high after an impressive first performance in rugby league.
