Sirius Academy North Year 7 Boys won their first match of the year after a convincing, and much improved performance against Carleton High from Pontefract in the 2nd Round of the Yorkshire Plate Competition.
In very windy conditions it was Carleton who started the brightest and got an early try under the sticks to make it 6 – 0. Sirius North showed great character to respond immediately with a try of their own from Harris Dukes as he powered over to level the scores. The impressive Cody Welham, who led the team all over the park put Sirius North in front with a powerful run to score near the corner to make it 10 – 6. Carleton had the wind and the slope in their favour and capitalised on this with two tries in quick succession under the sticks to make the score 18 – 10 at the halftime break.
The Sirius team knew they had the wind and slope advantage in the second half and utilised the game plan to perfection. Lennon Jennison ran onto the ball like a steam train to go over and make it 18 – 16 to Carleton. Hamza Ghorbandi showed his strength on his debut for the team and was next over the tryline as Sirius took the lead 20 – 18. With no mistakes in attack from Sirius, Carleton could not get the ball back and Sirius just kept completing their sets and getting their rewards from it. Harris Dukes ran nearly the full length of the pitch to extend the lead for Sirius before Cody Welham made sure that Sirius would go through the quarter finals with a fine solo try to make it 32 – 18 with only five minutes remaining. The kicking game of Cody Welham was superb, especially in the windy conditions, and when they got a repeat set near the Carleton tryline there was no stopping Hamza Ghorbandi going over for his second try of the afternoon. The whistle went shortly after and Sirius North celebrated their very first win and a place in the quarter final of the Yorkshire Plate.
Although the attack must be credited, as the boys looked very organised and shared the work, in defence there were some outstanding contributions from Isaac Gray, Ellis Opie, Mackenzie Kinsley, Harrison Collins and Cody Welham.
The boys improvements since their last two games has been incredible and that is down to the hard work they have been putting in at training after school. Please congratulate the boys on their success, performance and attitude. We now look forward to seeing who we have next in the quarter final after half term, but on that performance the boys should not fear anyone!
