Year 7 Boys Rugby team through to 1/4 final of Yorkshire Plate

[22 Mar 2023]

Sirius started the brightest and got an early score to settle the nerves. After the Salendine Nook defence kept Jenson out by just tackling him short of the tryline, a smart scoot from Josh saw him dive over to open the scoring at 4 – 0. After completing their first few sets of six and putting real pressure on the Salendine Nook side, a mistake near their own tryline early in the tackle count saw Salendine Nook go over from the resulting scrum to level the scores. Sirius could not hang onto the ball and once again dropped the ball in a dangerous position, and once again Salendine Nook capitalised on this to take the lead at 8 – 4. Credit to Siriu, they worked hard to get up the field with good runs from Dominic, Mckenzie and Ashdon, this dragged in the Salendine Nook defence and Issac was smart enough to see the gap out wide and score in the corner, 8 – 8 on the halftime whistle.

Sirius were told to look after the ball better in the second half and they should go on and win the game. Sirius listened to the advice and completed their first set well, with Josh smart kick on the last being knocked on near the Salendine Nook tryline. From the resulting next set, Mckenzie on his Sirius North debut crashed over under the sticks, Josh converted to make it 14 – 8. Salendine Nook always looked dangerous with the ball in hand as they liked to throw the ball around and were faster than us on the edges, and this resulted in their speedy winger racing over 80 meters and it looked as though he would score in the corner, however fullback Michael had other ideas and made a superb tackle to force the player to knock on. A real game changer. Sirius looked after the ball well in the next set of six with Charlie and Mason getting more involved and looking dangerous. Once again on the last tackle Josh put through a lovely grubber kick, the follow up defence from Dominic forced the knock on again, right on the Salendine Nook tryline. A move from the training ground saw Josh put Ashdon over from the resulting scrum, Josh added the extras to make the final score Sirius Academy North 20 Salendine Nook 8.

Please congratulate the squad on their outstanding performance to take them through to the ¼ final of the Yorkshire Plate, which is a first for Sirius Academy North and a great achievement for this set of boys.

Player of the match in the backs went to Josh for his intelligent kicking game and organisation. In the forwards it went to McKenzie on his debut for his willingness to continuously take the ball in and make good yards forward every time.
