Year 8 Boys Rugby Team through to Round 2 of the Yorkshire Plate
Sirius Academy North 48 De Lacy Academy 4
Sirius Academy North Year 8 Boys rugby team are through to the next round of Yorkshire Plate after a convincing win against De Lacy Academy from Wakefield. The game was evenly matched for the first ten minutes of the game, but it was Sirius Academy North who broke the deadlock when the impressive Cody Welham showed his power and strength going over from an attacking scrum. De Lacy Academy fought back well and got a try of their own to level the scores. But after that it was all Sirius Academy North as they controlled the ball well and got their rewards. Harries Dukes proved his strength and pace by breaking through the line and making it over the tryline for Sirius to take the lead, Cody Welham converted 10 – 4. Next up on the scoresheet was Isaac Gray as he went in at the corner, shortly after Cody Welham went over again under the sticks showing great vision on the last tackle to take the ball to the line and through the gap, the scoreline at the halftime break was 22 – 4 in favour of Sirius Academy North.
The second half the Sirius side were challenged with not letting De Lacy over the their try line again, and credit to the boys, they worked hard as a team to prevent this from happening, down the middle and out wide, there was no way through the organised and determined defensive line. In attack the Sirius side was looking dangerous and it wasn’t long before they scored again, this time it was a precision kick from Cody Welham to the corner on the last tackle which was grounded by Isaac Gray. Captain Mackenzie Kinsley was choosing the right options from dummy half and the runners were coming onto the ball at pace with Lee Rumble, Ellis Opie and Hamza Ghorbandi leading the way. Sirius extended the scoreline even further when superb backing up from fullback Lennon Jennison came into the line well to go over for a try in the corner. Callum Bamforth came in off the wing and made over 60 yards to set up Harrison Collins for his first try of the game. In the later stages of the game it looked like De Lacy may have broke through, but Michael Nelson on his debut came up with a try saving tackle. Two more quick tries in the last five minutes came from the strong running Harries Dukes to round off his hat-trick and a superb 48 – 4 victory. This was a real team effort, the boys shared the work in attack and worked hard for each other in defence, and to only concede one try in a 50 minute game is a fantastic achievement.
The talented Year 8 Boys now face Outwood Grange away in the second round of the Yorkshire Plate, and if they perform as well as they did today, then they could be going much further in this competition.
