Year 8 Boys Rugby WIN!

[14 May 2024]

Sirius Academy North 24       Temple Moor (Leeds) 20

Our Year 8 Boys have made it through to the Yorkshire Plate ¼ Final after a narrow victory against Temple Moor from Leeds. The boys had to dig in deep in the later stages of the game to keep their lead and they worked hard as a team to ensure they made it through to the next round.

Sirius started the game completing their sets of six well and working their way down the field. From the resulting handover, the Temple Moor player knocked on 10 metres from his own tryline and captain Josh W was the quickest to react as he picked up the loose ball and went in under the sticks for 6 – 0. Temple Moor responded immediately with a try of their own in the corner for 6 – 4. This gave the away team some momentum, as they went in again shortly after to make it 10 – 6 in their favour. However, a great individual try from Charlie R saw him round the defence and go in at the corner, showing real speed to level the scores at 10 – 10.  A mistake from Temple Moor gave Sirius the ball in good field position and after a good run from Dominic A and a quick play the ball, Charlie R caught their defence off guard and scooted over for 14 – 10. Temple Moor went over in the last play of the first half to ensure they went in 16 – 10 up at the break.

Sirius were told that whoever completes their sets the best will go on and win the game, so we just needed some composure in our attack and didn’t need to score off the first play. The boys listened well and managed to get themselves back in front, courtesy of Josh W, who once again showed his agility, strength and pure class to go over for a superb individual try in the corner, which he backed up with a sensational conversion to make it 20 – 16 to Sirius. The North boys once again completed their set of six, with good runs from Kayden S and Jack H. On the last tackle a precision across field kick from Year 7 halfback Nolan L was collected by Charlie R, who went over in the corner for his hat-trick and put Sirius in front at 24 – 16. Temple Moor got one back with only a minute remaining to make for a tense finish, but Sirius held out well, with some good teamwork in defence to go on and win the game 24 – 20. They now play Wolfreton at home in the ¼ Final of the Yorkshire Plate.

Please congratulate the squad on the outstanding effort, to beat an experienced Temple Moor side. Special thanks to the four boys that stepped in who had never played before – Arya A, Kane M, Callum S and Jenson R.

Player of the match went to Josh W, who just led the team around the park in attack and defence. A solid performance from the influential halfback.
