Year 8 Girls finish in 2nd Place in the Hull Schools RL Competition
The Sirius Academy North Year 8 Girls Rugby League team can hold their heads up high after finishing 2nd in the Hull Schools Tournament. Without influential player and captain Sadie, it was always going to be an uphill battle, but the 12 girls that took to the field can be extremely proud of their performance, in a very evenly matched competition, that could have been won by any of the three teams.
Sirius Academy North 4 Archbishop Sentamu 5
Archbishop Sentamu started the game well, with a try in the corner, but Sirius Academy North responded immediately with a superb solo try from Angel as she powered her way over, after a great run from Lacie who dragged in a few defenders as she proved hard to down to the floor. Errors from the Sirius North side gifted Archbishop Sentamu a couple of tries before a superb scoot from Ameera saw her dive over from close range after spotting a gap out wide, to make the score 3 – 2 to Archbishop at the halftime break and all to play for in the second half. Sirius North started the second half with lots of enthusiasm and when a quick play the ball from Olivia was picked up by Ameera, she spotted that the defensive line was not set and ran over 20 meters to touch down and level the scores. Archbishop went over again to take the lead once more, but Sirius levelled it up again not long after when Victoria burst through the defensive line to make it 4 – 4 with only a minute left. Unfortunately for Sirius they couldn’t hang on, and on the last play of the game, the strong Archbishop player went over in the corner for the all-important try that would seal the victory for them.
Sirius Academy North 5 Sirius Academy West 4
In the Sirius derby it was the North side that started the strongest, with a try on their first set of six from Lacie as she proved too strong from the Sirius West team. The Sirius North team were defending well and forced some errors from Sirius West, which the North side capitalised on and went over for two more tries, one from the impressive Angel who looked dangerous every time she had the ball, and also one from the hard-working Victoria for a 3 – 0 lead. Sirius North took their foot off the gas a bit and allowed Sirius West to get back in it at 3 – 2, but just before the halftime whistle Victoria once again showed her skill and strength by going over to make it 4 – 2 at the break. The second half saw Sirius North sharing the work, with Year 7s Hannah, Connie Mae and Gracie taking the ball in well. Hannah in particular proved extremely hard for the Sirius West team to get down, with her superb agility and speed. Sirius West managed to make it 4 – 3 early into the second half, but Sirius North was not going to let this one slip, as Olivia stepped up to go over and extend the lead for a well-deserved try. Sirius West went over for a late consolation try, but the final score ended up 5 tries to 4 in favour of the North side.
Please congratulate the squad on their outstanding performance, attitude, enthusiasm and team work. They turn up in numbers to training and work hard to improve, a great group of girls who I am sure, with their captain back fit (Sadie) – will go and reach the Yorkshire stages next year.
Player of the match went to Victoria – not only for her three tries, but also for her impressive defensive display, as she never took a backwards step and made some great last-ditch tackles.
Special thanks to Miss Workman and Miss Warrener for their support with the team at the tournament.
