Year 8 girls Yorkshire rugby result
This morning myself and Miss Gay took our year 8 girls football team across to West Yorkshire to take part in the Yorkshire rounds of their rugby league competition. After finishing in the top three schools in Hull alongside Sirius West and Malet Lambert, the girls were keen to impress and get through to the national stages to be held at Wembley later on this year.
The competition was made up of 10 teams from all over the region, each team being placed into a group of five. The top two teams from each group would progress to the semi final to determine the two teams going through to the national rounds.
Game 1: Sirius North 2 – 4 St John Fisher
Our first game was against a team containing some big year 8 girls. Whilst St John Fisher scored an early try, North were quick to respond with a try of their own; some great defensive work from the team and superb driving forward from Alisha Brennon to put the ball down and make it 1-1. St John Fisher responded quickly, powering through and scoring 3 very quick tries. Millie Tymon scored a second for North in the dying seconds, but our opponents were handed an early competition win.
Game 2: Sirius North 2 – 0 Settle College
Now the girls had got into the swing of things, they were very much up for the game against Settle College. A nice offload from Lucy Hayley gave Millie Tymon a fantastic opportunity to drive through the defence to make it 1-0. Year 7 Zoe Otaru utilised her pace to breeze past our opponents down the wing to put the ball down for a second try. This was a great team performance; excellent work in defence meant a clean sheet was kept and deservingly so.
Game 3: Sirius North 1 – 3 Castleford
Our third game saw us come up against competition favourites and last year’s national finalists Castleford. The girls were not put off by this, with Shahad Alahmadi and Alisha Brennon running the ball in superbly to eventually pop the ball off to Lucy Hayley and with some fancy footwork, danced her way past the Castleford girls to make it 1-0. The girls fought valiantly in this game but 3 tries from the same Castleford player (tree like in height!) proved too much and the game finished 3-1.
Game 4: Sirius North 4 -0 Corpus Christi
It was evident by this point that the girls were getting tired from their efforts in the three previous games. Corpus Christi, another competition favourite took full advantage of this making sure our girls were unable to carry the ball forward very far. Four tries for the opposition saw the game finish 4-0.
Whilst the girls did not qualify for nationals, they played extremely well and represented the academy superbly throughout. If you see any of the girls around, please congratulate them for their efforts:
