Year 9 boys take the victory in the 2nd round of the Yorkshire cup
The year 9 boys put on an encouraging display against Newsome High School, to cruise through to the quarter finals of the Yorkshire cup.
The pitch was situated on top of a wet and windy hill in the heart of Huddersfield. Amid the conditions the Sirius team came out strong from the first whistle. Jack Hassard began the game with a big downfield kick that was chased down with a huge hit from Joe Aitchison that forced the first error of the match. This initial play was quickly rewarded in the 3rd tackle of the first set, as the big hitter himself scored under the posts. The first 10 minutes of the match were dominated by the Sirius boys with Taylor Eastwood running in a further two tries out wide with some powerful hit ups. Although this was a different scenario for the conversions as none were successful for the duration of the first half.
A lack of concentration from a return kick off a Newsome boot forced a Sirius knock on which was capitalised out wide to see the opponents score and convert their first try to bring the score to 12-6. For the next 10 minutes of the match it became a comedy of errors for both sides in the struggle against the conditions. This was eradicated when Sirius completed a set with a downfield kick that forced a knock on under the posts; the monotony was soon over as Jackson Davis-Barker scooted from dummy half to score and increase the lead to 16-6. This was quickly followed up from the restart, as the platform was set by Joe Aitchison and Isaac Green with some awesome hit ups. On the back of the return, the scrum half Dylan Booth ceased the opportunity to display his agility to mislead the defensive line and then the fullback to go in under the posts. The lads stuck to the game plan, which rewarded them with some hard yards from Brandon Sargeson and Matty Coulter that allowed Ben Canvess to slip two tries in under the posts that saw Sirius go in at half time 32-6.
The second half saw Sirius make hard work for themselves at times through a lack of concentration in defence, as Newsome were allowed to scoot under the posts twice within the first 10 minutes to bring the game to 32-16. However this was overturned by the enthusiasm in attack. As frustration was setting in, a kick return from Sirius to the winger was well chased and won back through a well timed 1 on 1 by Taylor Eastwood. This time possession was valued by the Sirius lads as the game plan was evidently picked up and possession was valued. Sirius began to play some good rugby, leading through Jack Hassard that was arranging and executing set plays. This patience was rewarded as the lads created an overlap that sent Taylor Eastwood into the corner for his hat-trick. The last 15 minutes of the match was a pleasure to watch as it was evident that success was the only option for the Sirius team. Again some influential plays opened up gaps that Joe Kennedy capitalised on through running a line to exploit the defence and run 30 yards to score under the posts. This was the same for Sirius Academy’s biggest prop forward Isaac Green who displayed his determination and power to bounce off 2 players that saw him run 30 meters and score his first try for the Academy, to complete the scoring for both teams and take a confident win in favour of Sirius 52-16.
