Year 9 Girls Rugby League

[16 May 2019]

In the Hull Schools RL Cup Competition at KCOM Craven Park, only Sirius Academy West and Sirius Academy North could raise a team at the Year 9 age group, and what a game it was for a Sirius derby, with some outstanding rugby on show that both sides can be extremely proud of.

Sirius Academy West 6 Sirius Academy North 2

The game started very evenly matched with both sides testing each others defence out. The scoreline remained at 0 – 0 for quite some time as no team could break through the strong defensive line. Eventually the deadlock was broken and it was Sirius West who opened the scoring, but credit to Sirius North, they responded immediately with a powerful run from Gabija Giedryte for her to crash over and level the scores. Shahad Alahmadi and Rejoice Ukaegbu were running strong and causing the West defence all sorts of problems. But it was West who went over next to regain the lead, the North defence switched off from a loose ball as the West player picked up the ball and ran 70 meters to score.  Sirius North did everything to try and get back in the game, smart play from acting half back saw Lucy Haley make some good scoots forward, and the ever impressive Zoe Otaru was showing her skills in attack and great tackle technique in defence. A good spell for West saw them score two more tries to extend the score to 4 – 1, but the North girls did not give up and  got another well deserved try from the impressive Gabija Giedryte who could not be stopped from close range. Sirius West nearly went over again, but for a superb try saving tackle from Madison Wilson who held the player up over the line. As the North players tired in the very humid conditions, West sealed the victory with two more tries to make the final score 6 – 2 in favour of Sirius West.

Please congratulate the girls on their outstanding effort, attitude and behaviour, they have improved in their rugby so much and should be very proud of how they performed.
